Match Reports 12 & 13 Oct 2024

Fylde 1  0-2  Alderley Edge 1

A wet and windy day on the Fylde coast as Alderley Edge emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over the home side, Fylde HC.

From the outset Fylde started strong with early dominance and possession. But it was Alderley Edge who broke through first with a solo run and reverse stick shot into the Fylde goal. Not long after Alderley Edge doubled their lead with a well worked penalty corner.

In the second quarter Fylde continued to battle, pushing forward and creating more opportunities. Meg Wildish won the ball back high up the pitch to set up Lucy Wane, only for her shot to just go wide of the goal. The pressure continued as Fylde increased the urgency in search of an equaliser, and they came close again when Flor Zappulla had a goal disallowed, and a drag flick saved by the Alderley Edge keeper. Alderley Edge came close to adding to their lead had it not been for player of the match Katie Barker in goal, who made a series of crucial saves with remarkable composure.

The challenging weather conditions tested both teams’ resilience and skill in the third and fourth quarter. Fylde, determined to score, pressed Alderley Edge and after some great build up play Jess Wharton had a close range shot saved on the line. As the match drew to a close Fylde’s frustrations grew and despite their efforts, they could not break through, and the final whistle confirmed a disappointing result. Fylde HC will be look to regroup and build on their strengths in their next game away to league leaders Bowdon.

Fylde 2  5-0  Brooklands-Poynton 2

A fantastic effort from the whole squad today with an impressive 5-0 win!

Fylde ladies 2s started strong with an attacking side, which was key throughout the majority of the match. We played in versatile positions which worked seemlessly throughout the game with lots of subs to keep up the energy.

In the first fifteen minutes EJ Dunkerley passed a long ball straight down the middle past the opposition and connecting with Frankie Margerison who reversed hit into the goal. Through out the game we had numerous short corners, which led to our second goal from EJ. Within the next 5 minutes Chelsea Atkinson scored a great goal from open play. As we continued to pressure the oppositions defence.

The whistle blew for half time, as we continued with a strong attack. Focusing from the team talk on switching the play our defence kept us structured and transferred the ball around the back, leading to connections ahead. Again we had the advantage of a short corner, and a great deflection from Emma Savidge who gave Fylde their fourth goal. Emma continued with another strong goal to end the game. Absolutely great efforts all round!!

Fylde 3  3-2  Penrith 1

With a full squad of 15, Fylde 3s started off the match strong, pressing high against the experienced Penrith side. This resulted in an early goal within the first 7 minutes coming from Issy Gut. The game stayed like this with Fylde continuing to attack the D however Penrith also had the same idea and started to leave attackers high in the D. This meant that they had a couple of breakthroughs with one resulting in an unfortunate goal.

This then took the score 1-1 into half time where the team talked about the positives of the game and what we needed to work on in the second half to ensure we came out with 3 points.

As Penrith got into their stride they gained a short corner which lead to Fylde being 2-1 down, however this motivated our young side more. A quick turn over in the midfield from Hermione Edwards lead the ball being passed to Anna Vavoso who dribbled past multiple of the opposition to score our second goal.

The game stayed fairly level for the rest of the match and both sides tried to secure their winning goal. The back 4 worked hard to make sure they were closed down quickly to stop them scoring another goal and passing up the line to the forwards to allow more scoring opportunities. This became apparent as Anna Vavoso once again gained possession of the ball and drove up the pitch skilfully and pulled the ball round the goal keeper to find our winning goal within the last 5 minutes.

This meant that the defence had to make sure we kept the score this way, a short corner was awarded to Penrith on the final whistle however Lauren Appleyard, Abbie Southern, Melissa Johnson Parker and Flo Worden did everything possible to get the ball out of play with the whole Penrith team waiting around the D.

This was definitely one of the Fylde 3rd teams best performances as a team and we will take all positives and coaching points in to training next week to work on for our next match.Player of the match was awarded to Anna Vavoso for her 2 outstanding goals.

Lancaster & Morecambe 2  1-3  Fylde 5

Fylde's fabulous 5s added another win to their collection this season.

As the spectators sought refuge in the dugouts from the poor weather conditions, the team dug deep to produce a comfortable 3-1 win. Goals were very much a team effort with Sophia Melling, Megan Hartley Smith and Hollie Guthrie ensuring they crossed over the goal line.

Fortunately, the only injury sustained was a temporary fake eyelash catastrophe for Leah Richmond. Well done 5s, we go again next week!

Fylde 6 Development  3-1  Brookfield Development

Nine players last week improved to sixteen this week! Such is the up and down world of hockey in Fylde’s Development Squad.

A mixed blend of players from 4th and 5th Teams gelled well with the young inexperienced side with Hollie Bailey scoring on her debut.

Tilly Tomlinson and Alys Williams added two more in strong attacks and Brookfield only broke the defences once in reply.

Coaching points were noted as the team dominated their older opposition and they left joyful and dry, avoiding the stormy showers later in the day.

Preston 7  4-4  Fylde 1

On a brisk, sunny autumn morning the match between rivals Preston 7 and Fylde 1 was about to kick off with great enthusiasm. The warm up by Mr. Holmes was strong and the prep-talks by our esteemed leader Richard left very little to wish for. Off we went !!

Somewhere in the first 5 minutes we suddenly realised that we were short of our usually rock solid Peter The Defender. The 1-0 to Preston slipped in, but left us more pumped than anything to seek results.

The well trained upfront (sideways moveable) pressure wall also known as ‘THE W’ kept losing its shape a bit, which led to the Preston lads finding gaps to get rid of the ball. They were able to create momentum quite often but at this stage it didn’t result in too much trouble as HOPE was created by Phil’s assist which led to Dutchie Tim making a-somewhat clumsy looking, but very effective 1-1.

During the next part of the match it became more visible that Preston was an all-adult team with many years of experience under their belt. Fylde’s defenders Phil and Mr. Holmes risked their manlihood by throwing themselves in front of the ball during one of Preston’s short corners. Pure dedication was shown by these men. Unfortunately Preston managed to score 2 goals taking themselves to a 3-1 lead but this didn’t leave Fylde 1 deflated. Again it was Hope that created perspective by scoring the 3-2 after a great assist off our Jack. If only his fiancé could have seen this brilliant assist……. Half time whistle was blown !

Frustration was shared during the break and rightly so. As ambitious Fylde youngsters we hadn’t set our alarms for a sunny walk in the nearby park, but instead we were on a mission. Our one and only young adult Luke realised again that he wished he didn’t set an alarm that morning and used the break as a welcoming snoozing moment instead. Strong leadership was shown again and motivational talks took over the scene. We would all go back out there and show these pensioners what we would be made of.

The true spirit of our youngster became clear during this part of the game. Multiple strong tackles off newcomer Sam were effective and inspiring. Charlie managed to show his technicalities on the ball and give solid passes along the sideline. Mr. Longlegged Oliver Adewale managed to easily outrun the opponent and create good passes to Oliver van Rijn up front who played his strong technical part on the battlefield.

Most likely it was the spin-off from these youngsters which inspired Phil Hope to find his deepest strengths. Assisted by his youngsters, Phil managed to get the ball in the D with only the goalie left to deal with. This keeper was drawn out of his cave which led to a tiny space in the left top corner for Phil to utilise. BOOM a solid 3-3 was on the board.

As a team we knew we had a chance of taking this one home and we all went for it. Unfortunately our one and only Mr. Nutter wasn’t even skilled enough to keep Preston from scoring the 4-3. We kept on trying with high level of passion. At some point the opponent’s D was so full of Fyldesmen that Tim decided to randomly strike the ball in there seeking some kind of magical touch. The smooth touch came from Jack which brought the ultimate feeling of joy. If only his fiancé could have seen this……

With only minutes to play the emotions in Fylde’s D started to rise which led to a series of short corners. It was the brutal dedications from the 5 masked men which ultimately kept the ball from going in. Finally the whistle blew and kept a solid 4-4 as end result. Proud we can be. Thanks boys for your passionate input. The Dutchies.

Fylde Girls U14  14-2  Kirkby Stephen Girls U14

Fylde under 14’s travelled to Kirkby Stephen on Sunday afternoon with a strong squad, a good warm up was led by the girls and confidence was high. Looking at the opposition they only had 8 players 5 minutes before push back so the girls felt like the game was ours to take.

Coach Phil Hope instructed the team to be respectful but go for the win and be clinical, late arrivals meant the opposition started with 2 and they put us on the back foot scoring in the first 5 minutes, it didn’t take us long to get back into it with Camilla scoring 3 goals in the next 10 minutes. We continued to be ruthless in front of goal and gave their goalkeeper no chance with some devastating passing and shooting, Captain Lauren Mayor was outstanding at the heart of defence and Isla Carter showed why she is so good on the right of midfield driving the ball to the base line and setting up numerous goals.

Kirkby managed to get another in the second half but they were no match for the Fylde team who dominated throughout, a 14-2 win in the end and that’s 2 wins from 2 in the England Hockey under 14’s league.
